How to reduce image file size without ruining quality
12 October 2026
Start with the right format
Format choice matters more than any other setting:
- Photos → JPG or WebP
- Graphics and screenshots → PNG or WebP
- Web use → WebP usually beats both
Converting a photo from PNG to JPG alone can cut the file size by 80% with no visible difference.
Use the quality slider
When converting to JPG or WebP on ConvertPics, you get a quality slider. Some guidelines:
- 90%+ — archiving, printing, further editing
- 80% — the sweet spot for most web images
- 60–70% — thumbnails and previews where size matters most
Below 50% you will start to see blocky artefacts, especially in skies and gradients.
Resize before you compress
A 4000-pixel-wide photo displayed at 800 pixels wide is wasting 96% of its data. Resize first, then convert.
A practical workflow
- Resize the image to the largest size it will actually be displayed at.
- Convert to JPG or WebP.
- Set quality to 80% and check the result.
- Nudge the slider down until you can just notice a difference, then back off one step.
Try it now with the JPG to WebP converter — your files never leave your device.
